Design Statement - Robyn Brookes

Accessible and inclusive physical play opportunities we are adding to the existing play area include spinning, sliding, rocking, bouncing and climbing. The main Lauren play unit has a slide, tunnel, interactive panels and 5 different access routes of varying difficulty including a ramp for children in wheelchairs. The unit encourages children to explore and develop their physical ability a level they are comfortable with. Our design replaces the existing spinning disk with a wheelchair accessible carousel so children of any ability can take part in spinning play. The seesaw and trampoline are play items for bouncing and rocking that exercise children’s awareness of their physical capabilities and their environment. They are popular features with high enjoyment and excitement value amongst most play areas. We are also adding a new wetpour pathway that leads to locations of the existing inclusive swing and to the existing surface where the new carousel is situated. This will provide an accessible route to additional rocking and swinging play elements.

We are pleased to present your new playground for Brickhills/Henbrook Play Area. Our approach to play provision aims to provide high quality play experiences to children of all abilities. To us this means offering physical, sensory and social play value with our equipment and overall design. The elements within your new playground allow children to play in many different ways, exploring their own ideas and actions, and interacting with the environment around them. We create playgrounds in accordance with the ten Principles for Designing Successful Play Spaces set out in Design for Play: A Guide to Creating Successful Play Spaces (Play England 2008), which states that successful play spaces:

· Are “bespoke”. · Are well located. · Make use of natural elements. · Provide a wide range of play experiences. · Are accessible to both disabled and non-disabled children. · Meet community needs. · Allow children of different ages to play together. · Build in opportunities to experience risk and challenge. · Are sustainable and appropriately maintained. · Allow for change and evolution.

Sensory play experiences within the new design are tactile, auditory, visual in the form of interactive play panels, musical sound items, mirrors, and surfacing with coloured shapes.

The new wetpour pathway doesn’t just lead to some of the existing play features but also loops and winds through the new section of the play area connecting equipment locations and travelling through sensory play pockets. Along its way it passes through the variety of play mirrors, past tactile play panels and musical chimes.

Your new play area focuses on providing social play value by delivering an environment where children can take part in cooperative play, social interaction, dramatic and imaginative play.

The main play unit, carousel, trampoline and seesaw can all be used by multiple children or children and their accompanying adults together. The journey of the path encourages story telling play for children of all abilities, including wheelchair users and undulations as it travels up and over the bunded mound introduces interaction with the natural environment. Overall, our design for Bickhills/Henbrook Play Area intends to meet the needs of the community and provide users of the play area with exciting, accessible and inclusive opportunities to play. Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

In line with the above principles, your new design offers inclusive and accessible play opportunities.

Wheelchair accessible and inclusive elements included across the play area are:

· Integration Carousel · Integration Seesaw · Floor Trampoline · The Lauren Play Unit · Musical Chimes · Interactive Play Panels · Mirror Panels · Wetpour Pathway with undulating section (Through new area and also to inclusive swing in existing area)

Check foundation level requirements for each item GENERAL NOTES If not indicated on this plan, north point must be confirmed prior to installation to ensure that slides do not face due south. Exact positions & orientation of new items may be subject to a final site survey and setting out plan. Any inconsistencies on site should be verified with eibe before commencement of work. eibe recommend that existing trees are risk-assessed by the client to ensure the integrity of accessible branches, that overhanging limbs do not conflict with new play equipment or vehicle access and that the canopy will not produce excessive leaf drop which could cause a hazard within the play area. This design layout conforms to the relevant EN Safety Standard. GRASS & GRASS MAT SURFACING Where equipment is installed directly into grass and the free height of fall is between 0.6m and 1.5m it is the responsibility of the playground operator to ensure that the grass sward is maintained in good order. Where equipment is installed with grass mat surfacing it is the responsibility of the playground operator to ensure that the grass is maintained in good order. When laid directly onto existing grass this surface will follow the natural contours of the ground. RUBBER MULCH SURFACING eibe recommend the use of a 50mm stone base when installing rubber mulch. If installed without the finished surface will be a reflection of the ground beneath it, following any undulations, & will not be a completely flat surface. Rubber mulch will not cure any existing drainage problems & will require foundations and/or some kind of drainage system prior to installation.

Jubilee Park is situated in the heart of Waterlooville, Hants, and is a well-used and loved playing field. The playing fields are often used for community events and are also home to a MUGA, Skate Park and numerous sports clubs such as Bowls and Cricket. Havant Borough Council has previously preferred to use metal play equipment for their play spaces due to past experiences using timber. However, in 2021 eibe Play arranged site visits of three play spaces around Fareham with the Park Officers for Havant Borough Council. Fareham Borough Council installed these play spaces over two years, which previously had the same opinion. All three of these destinations play spaces have been

a great success and changed Fareham Borough Councils’ mindset on the quality and durability of timber play equipment. After visiting these play areas with eibe Play and speaking to the council members from Fareham Borough Council, the council saw the quality. It felt the durability was suitable for both parties to feel confident enough for eibe Play to tender for any of their play area refurbishment schemes. A few months passed, and then eibe Play received the tender paperwork for the exciting redevelopment of the Jubilee Park Play Area. We were highly excited to tender for this scheme, and after a site visit, to better understand the requirements and the playing space as a whole, eibe Play started the design stage of the tender submission. We felt this play area, especially the local community, deserved a WOW factor play area to fit in with the destination feel for the rest of the park. This was at the forefront of our minds with the initial design work. We also thought that the play area needed to represent elements of the nature found around the park, which would help with the theme of the play area and educate the local children. However, this can be seen

all around the play area, with the theming within the wet pour surface. The play area also needed to be inclusive and include play equipment that children of all abilities can use. The play equipment eibe Play has chosen for this play space included elements designed for reasonable access for all users; however, it also allowed all children to play together without being singled out. This can be seen in particular with the inclusion of the Inclusive Floor Roundabout and the Play Unit Lauren which has an accessible ramp leading up to the main platform, surrounded by play panels. Another critical factor when designing any play space is accessibility for all users. Therefore, we have created all the play equipment accessible via a hard-standing surface. Which also helps the equipment to be used all year round. In February 2022, eibe Play was excited to hear the news that we had been awarded the contract for the refurbishment of Jubilee Park Play Area. The work commenced in April 2022, with a predicted finish date of the May bank holiday weekend. With much hard work, we managed to meet this deadline, where

the play area was opened to many excited children keen to use the great new play equipment the play space had to offer. eibe Play was keen to support the council and the Friends of the Park group to create a grand opening worthy of this great new play space. Therefore, eibe Play donated balloons, ribbons, bunting and goodie bags for the first children to use the play area. Eibe Play is looking forward to a fantastic working relationship with Havant Borough Council to ensure the play space is a success and well-loved by the local community for years to come.

Following a successful play equipment installation at Hinchingbrooke Country Park in the summer of 2022, eibe Play was commissioned to carry out another second phase of play equipment installation after the summer holidays had finished. The Country Park team were delighted with how the first phase of work went. However, they felt they wanted to increase their offering to children with lesser abilities that visit the park. After a thorough consultation with the Country Park team, both parties selected equipment that they felt would increase the offering to all park users. The equipment locations were the next phase of the decision-making process, as the right equipment had to go to the correct location. We also felt that the new play equipment needed to increase the play offering on the new four locations of new play zones around the park.

The first play item that was chosen was our Inclusive Roundabout. This fantastic play piece offers the opportunity for everyone to play as one whilst also offering children in wheelchairs the opportunity to play alongside their friends. The Country Parks team and eibe Play felt this item was best located within the sensory zone at the beginning of the country park, as it can be accessed by all as it is just off the pathway. This, alongside the bonded mulch safer surfacing, allows this item to be used all year round. Within this area also, we have located our Wheelchair Swing. This fantastic play item offers wheelchair users the ability to experience swinging within a controlled environment and increases the offering the part offers its wheelchair users. Moving into the park and located within the Grassland Playspace, we located our Play Unit Lauren. This is one of our most popular play items as it offers a wide range of play opportunities. From its accessible ramp to its many play panels, this fantastic play item can be used by children of all ages and abilities whilst

also promoting essential development skills such as eye- hand coordination and upper and lower body strength. The sensory play panels make this item a must for any sensory play space. Lastly, located within the Wetlands Play Space, we have included our brand new Wheelchair Seesaw. New to the eibe Play product range, this excellent play piece offers a fantastic play opportunity for children of all abilities to play together and experience the opportunities this Seesaw has to offer. All of the above play equipment was installed onto a bonded mulch safer surface, meaning they can be used and enjoyed by everyone all year round. eibe Play looks forward to working alongside the council to see how these play items are used and enjoyed moving forward, and we will continue to offer the support needed to ensure these are a success for years to come.

Foundations No Timber in the Ground

• eibe play equipment requires minimal maintenance. The timber can age naturally without any upkeep apart frommaintenance checks relating to moving components, nuts and bolts etc. If vandalism does occur then this can be easily addressed and remedied. For example, graffiti can be removed by sanding the wood, returning it to its natural condition without any need to re-treat the timber. Furthermore, should part of the equipment be deemed damaged beyond economical repair, due to its modular nature, eibe equipment may be easily repaired by replacing only the damaged section rather than a major section of the equipment. • eibe uses Galvanised or Stainless Steel feet, as required, for mounting our equipment onto the ground foundations and does not install timber support posts directly into the ground. With this and the CCB (Copper Chromium Boride) treatment, we have eradicated any problems or potential weaknesses in the structure of the equipment caused by rot or damp. All equipment is designed and installed to facilitate ease of access for inspection and maintenance throughout the whole of the play area • The wooden elements of the equipment will add a softness and subtlety to the play area which will not be present in an all- steel design. We believe in blending our designs into the natural environment and this is more easily achieved and aesthetically pleasing than non-organic materials.

HDPE

High Density Polyethylene

HDPE

• UV stabilized for fade resistant outdoor use • Will not rot, delaminate, splinter or crack • Stain and graffiti resistant for easy cleaning

• Durable orange peel textured finish • Moisture and chemical resistant • High impact resistant • 100% recyclable and non toxic • Easily machined and engraved • No heavy metals • No phthalates

High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) sheets are extruded and co-extruded thermoplastic materials that are used worldwide in the manufacture of panels and components for the Playground, Sport, Leisure and Recreation Industries. The versatile properties of this material, including UV stability, make it resistant to fading, moisture, weather, stain and graffiti. The perfect choice for outdoor environments. HDPE is easily routed or engraved using current CNC technology, in the case of 2-colour sheet options, you can remove the outer colour and revealing the colour inside to create almost unlimited design capabilities. Increasingly used across a wide range of industries and applications, HDPE panels are being used to replace timber and composite panel components. Whilst the initial cost of these materials may be lower, the long-termmaintenance requirements and shorter life expectancy make their choice a false economy. HDPE also offered as softer, warmer and more play friendly feel to it. In addition to all the product and user benefits, HDPE is 100% recyclable

For guarantees to remain in effect for their duration the Customer has a responsibility to adopt a suitable maintenance regime for all aspects of the play environment (please see eibe’s recommended maintenance below). All inspection and maintenance undertaken by the Customer, or by others on the Customer’s behalf must be recorded, detailed and documented. Maintenance records will be requested when a claim against eibe’s guarantees are made. Where inspection and maintenance records cannot be produced then eibe will not be responsible for honouring the guarantees offered. On the basis that recorded inspection and maintenance documentation can be produced then eibe will uphold the guarantees offered.
Misuse of any aspects of equipment or the play environment, acts of vandalism/anti-social behaviour, or general wear and tear through frequent use is not covered by the guarantees.

Aftercare and Maintenance Maintenance

Support

eibe supplies all relevant installation and maintenance instructions for each piece of equipment . This references the information provided above and in addition, provides specific requirements for the item of equipment. Combining the installation and maintenance instructions ensures that individual parts can be clearly identified and provides an understanding of how the equipment is assembled which will assist with any maintenance requirements. Where required, eibe supply specialist tools in order to carry out the required equipment maintenance – examples of this include specific drill/screw pieces in order to tighten anti-tamper fixings. Should the Customer wish to receive installation/maintenance instructions for each piece of equipment suggested as part of this tender response, these are readily available.

eibe playground equipment is designed and manufactured with a minimummaintenance requirement. Inevitably with any play equipment, maintenance activities will be required and shall be undertaken to ensure equipment longevity and to maintain compliance with the relevant standards. The following regime is recommended for all eibe play equipment:

Quarterly Checks

We recommend that a thorough check of all play equipment and entire play areas are conducted on a quarterly basis. Checks should include the above and, in addition, should include checks to ensure that all fixings are tight using the correct tools and correcting where not. In addition, undertaking a more thorough check to identify any wear to any moving parts, ropes, or fixings, and where appropriate taking remedial action.

Annual Checks

We recommend that an annual inspection is carried out, which would include the above recommendations. In addition, eibe advises that a qualified Independent Inspector carry out an inspection and produce a report of the play area and equipment to ensure that all elements remain sound, and in line with the appropriate standards. Where potential issues are highlighted then remedial action shall be taken. Please note that the above information is based upon eibe’s experience and recommendation only. Each play area and item of play equipment is different; therefore the Customer should instigate an appropriate maintenance plan, taking into consideration this guidance to ensure that all play areas and play equipment remain available for use. Based on experience, equipment is likely to require more regular maintenance during the first three months following its installation. This is on the basis that the equipment is adapting and acclimatising to its environment, and in addition during this period the amount of usage is likely to peak. Therefore, maintenance teams should plan for this and react accordingly. Whilst all types of equipment, features and elements within a public open space are potentially at risk from damage and wear from excessive use, eibe ensures that through careful design, quality manufacturing and extensive experience in developing public play environments, our product characteristics are: All materials used are of the highest quality, and designed specifically for heavy and potential inappropriate use. All appropriately treated where possible to be fire retardant All include anti-tamper fixings All equipment is modular allowing individual components to be replaced separately All fixings and areas for maintenance are assessable and can be reached without the need to remove sections of equipment Durability

Aftercare

eibe can provide aftercare services; not just parts supply, but inspection and assistance with future maintenance. In addition to the recommendations on maintenance and the supply of documentation needed to conduct and carry this out, eibe will appoint a dedicated Play Consultant in order to assist with any questions, queries, or issues which the Customer may have following contract award and project completion. Your Play Consultant will be your main point of contact for any contract related queries. This will provide you with a single point of contact rather than numerous, ensuring clear and consistent lines of communication for all contract queries, which may include meetings, site visits, phone and email communication. The Play Consultant will be supported by our Project Manager and Project Administration team to ensure continuity of service and after care during the contract delivery stage and beyond.
