Adur and Worthing Council and eibe Play share a fantastic relationship and have previously worked on various play spaces across Worthing, including Tarring Park and Gull Island. The play area is located right next to a primary school and surrounded by residential streets, so it is a popular destination for the local community. Families frequently use the fields surrounding the play area for picnics, dogwalkers and community events. The design brief from the council was to ensure the play areawas accessible for all and to include play features for children aged 2-12 years old. Due to the extremely high water table on site, the council also wanted to ensure that the play area was accessible all year round. They also wanted to ensure easy access for prams and wheelchairs throughout the play space. Due to the play areas’ extreme proximity to the seafront, eibe Play chose to go with a sea theme throughout. They also took elements of their existing catalogue and adapted them to fit the play space’s theme. For example, specific play panels and slides were manufactured to be blue to help support this theme. The pathway leading to the play space was also given a makeover, with a brand new wet pour surface leading from one gate to another. When designing the play space, eibe Play wanted to include the right amount of play value and features for children of all ages. For example, toddlers need to discover and test themselves on a climbing unit that offers them various play opportunities, such as climbing and sliding. This, in some instances, will be their first experience of climbing and sliding, therefore developing essential skills such as lower and upper body coordination. For this, we chose our Play Unit K2, which we dressed up to resemble a seaside cottage. Once they grow older and want to develop their skills further, they can move on to our adapted Climbing Unit, Ben Nevis, which has various challenging crossings and ways to get off and onto the unit. It also has an excellent and unique Broad Slide. The Ben Nevis is designed for children aged 5 to 12 years. Surrounding these fantastic items, eibe Play chose various other challenging and fun play options such as the Stand Up Carousel, Fisher Rockers, Snake Swing and multiple swings. Eibe Play needed to design this space as inclusive as possible. To help aid this already fully accessible play space, eibe Play included their brand new Wheelchair Seesaw. This, as well as the Broad Slide, various sea-themed play panels and the eibe Nest Swing seat, eibe Play believe they have chosen the right amount of play equipment that makes this play space accessible for all. As previously
mentioned, the play area’s safer surfacing has been designed to ensure it’s fully accessible all year round. This was a significant part of their design thinking process. The design includes an entire wet pour surface laid over the existing surfacing in most areas. This allows us to provide an environmentally friendly option, as there will be no to take materials off-site for refuge. This follows eibe Plays, environmentally green ethos. After the council went through a consultation stage with the local community, eibe Play was privileged to be awarded the play area refurbishment contract. They quickly engagedwith the council o refine the play equipment chosen, and after a couple of minor amendments, the manufacturing of the equipment commenced. The play area was opened by the council in time to be enjoyed by the children over a gloriously sunny winter’s weekend, and the initial feedback we have received has been very positive. eibe Play hope that Larkfield Play Area will be loved and well used by local children for years to come!

In the winter of 2021, eibe Play received the tender paperwork for this exciting scheme, of which all here at eibe Play were really excited about. This tender was part of an overall number of play areas to be designed within Kent Country Parks.
Eibe Play, were initially drawn to this tender, due to the lovely location of the site, and the council’s brief of a play
area that is in keeping with the area, and to reflect elements of its surroundings. Following an in-depth site meeting with the council, eibe were able to get a good picture as to what was required, and how we could create a play area that would really benefit the local community. The requirements were to create a play space that could be used by children for all ages and abilities, however to focus on the age groups of between 2-12 years old. Another key element of the design, was to include play items for children with lesser abilities. This is always at the forefront of our mind, when putting a design submission together. We therefore included various play items
that could be used by all ages and abilities, such as the Wheelchair Roundabout and Nest Swing. We also included a wheelchair accessible toddler climbing unit, that was jam-packed with play value, such as climbing, crawling and sliding. To enhance the play area, and to represent the theme of the surrounding areas, we have included themed elements both in our equipment and surfacing. The Country Park is surrounded a canal that flows all the way through it. To represent this, we have included our Santa Maria Play Ship, which has many a play feature, such as wobbly bridges and climbing nets, for all ages to enjoy.
The complete artificial surface, mean all elements of this fantastic play area, can be assessed all year round by wheelchairs and prams. We have also themed the surfacing to represent the nature that can be found around the park, such as bugs and flowers.

British Standard BS EN 1176 & 77
What is the background of the standard? Playground standards aren’t and have never been a legal requirement. However, following the BS EN 1176 represents good practice. This standard does have some limitations as compliance won’t automatically create a safe playground. The importance of providing good children’s playgrounds is becoming ever more important with the increasing demands on open space for other purposes. So often adult pressures override the outdoor play requirements of children, who need the social and play opportunities that playgrounds can provide to support their development and wellbeing. For those who are looking to provide exciting and well-designed equipment how can they be sure that the items will be appropriately constructed, for all the use and energy that children and the occasional parent need? The British Standard BS EN 1176 covers playground equipment, and the necessary surfacing to reduce the consequences of ground impact of a child. For example, during adventurous play exploring high up on equipment and unfortunately falling. This British Standard has the tremendous benefit of being produced with the joint expertise of all the European countries and importantly, is appropriate for any scale of playground provision, from the smallest community playspace to the largest city park. With the provided inspection information, their operators are also given information to enable them to implement the crucial ongoing maintenance of the equipment. Equipment supplied labelled to BS EN 1176, installed, inspected and maintained to that standard provides the safety assurance for concerned operators and parents, wherever their children are playing. It is the go-to Standard for all publicly accessible playground equipment whether in schools, parks, leisure centres or shopping areas. Risk Benefit Assessment Playground equipment not complying with EN 1176-1:2017 should not automatically be considered as being unsafe or requiring replacement. A risk assessment by competent persons should be used to determine what action, if any, is necessary. A number of new products are appearing on the market that are not specifically covered by the types of products found in the standard. Where items are not specifically covered by the additional requirements they should then be subject to a risk assessment.” Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents RoSPA recognises and promotes the fundamental role of play in children’s lives. This guide allows play providers to ensure that they encompass appropriate levels of risk and challenge in their provision by balancing risk against benefit. This will allow children to exercise their right to play in more satisfying settings. Accordingly, RoSPA endorses the approach taken by this guide and commends it to readers. David Yearley Head of Play Safety

Material HPL, High Pressure Laminate
Vibrant Colours Made in our eibe Factory
High Pressure Laminates are made of several layers of paper with a resin coating that has been joined under high pressure (based on thermally curing resins, homogeneously reinforced with wood fibres)HPL panels are extremely resilient by high tensile and binding strength with the necessary levels of elasticity. HPL is also impact resilient. The homogeneous core ensures high resilience against pulling out of attachments. This makes it outstandingly suitable for use in vandalism-prone areas. Dirt will not easily accumulate on the pore-free surface, which does not require treatment or care. Even graffiti can be removed without residue with suitable solvents, without attacking the surface. The panels can be cleaned with conventional cleaners.HPL panels contain no organic halogen (chlorine, fluorine, bromine, etc.) compounds, asbestos or wood protection agents (fungicides, pesticides, etc.). They are free of sulphur, mercury and cadmium, as well as other heavy metals.

HDPE
High Density Polyethylene
HDPE
• UV stabilized for fade resistant outdoor use • Will not rot, delaminate, splinter or crack • Stain and graffiti resistant for easy cleaning
• Durable orange peel textured finish • Moisture and chemical resistant • High impact resistant • 100% recyclable and non toxic • Easily machined and engraved • No heavy metals • No phthalates
High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) sheets are extruded and co-extruded thermoplastic materials that are used worldwide in the manufacture of panels and components for the Playground, Sport, Leisure and Recreation Industries. The versatile properties of this material, including UV stability, make it resistant to fading, moisture, weather, stain and graffiti. The perfect choice for outdoor environments. HDPE is easily routed or engraved using current CNC technology, in the case of 2-colour sheet options, you can remove the outer colour and revealing the colour inside to create almost unlimited design capabilities. Increasingly used across a wide range of industries and applications, HDPE panels are being used to replace timber and composite panel components. Whilst the initial cost of these materials may be lower, the long-termmaintenance requirements and shorter life expectancy make their choice a false economy. HDPE also offered as softer, warmer and more play friendly feel to it. In addition to all the product and user benefits, HDPE is 100% recyclable

Aftercare and Maintenance Maintenance
Support
eibe supplies all relevant installation and maintenance instructions for each piece of equipment . This references the information provided above and in addition, provides specific requirements for the item of equipment. Combining the installation and maintenance instructions ensures that individual parts can be clearly identified and provides an understanding of how the equipment is assembled which will assist with any maintenance requirements. Where required, eibe supply specialist tools in order to carry out the required equipment maintenance – examples of this include specific drill/screw pieces in order to tighten anti-tamper fixings. Should the Customer wish to receive installation/maintenance instructions for each piece of equipment suggested as part of this tender response, these are readily available.
eibe playground equipment is designed and manufactured with a minimummaintenance requirement. Inevitably with any play equipment, maintenance activities will be required and shall be undertaken to ensure equipment longevity and to maintain compliance with the relevant standards. The following regime is recommended for all eibe play equipment:
Quarterly Checks
We recommend that a thorough check of all play equipment and entire play areas are conducted on a quarterly basis. Checks should include the above and, in addition, should include checks to ensure that all fixings are tight using the correct tools and correcting where not. In addition, undertaking a more thorough check to identify any wear to any moving parts, ropes, or fixings, and where appropriate taking remedial action.
Annual Checks
We recommend that an annual inspection is carried out, which would include the above recommendations. In addition, eibe advises that a qualified Independent Inspector carry out an inspection and produce a report of the play area and equipment to ensure that all elements remain sound, and in line with the appropriate standards. Where potential issues are highlighted then remedial action shall be taken. Please note that the above information is based upon eibe’s experience and recommendation only. Each play area and item of play equipment is different; therefore the Customer should instigate an appropriate maintenance plan, taking into consideration this guidance to ensure that all play areas and play equipment remain available for use. Based on experience, equipment is likely to require more regular maintenance during the first three months following its installation. This is on the basis that the equipment is adapting and acclimatising to its environment, and in addition during this period the amount of usage is likely to peak. Therefore, maintenance teams should plan for this and react accordingly. Whilst all types of equipment, features and elements within a public open space are potentially at risk from damage and wear from excessive use, eibe ensures that through careful design, quality manufacturing and extensive experience in developing public play environments, our product characteristics are: All materials used are of the highest quality, and designed specifically for heavy and potential inappropriate use. All appropriately treated where possible to be fire retardant All include anti-tamper fixings All equipment is modular allowing individual components to be replaced separately All fixings and areas for maintenance are assessable and can be reached without the need to remove sections of equipment Durability
Aftercare
eibe can provide aftercare services; not just parts supply, but inspection and assistance with future maintenance. In addition to the recommendations on maintenance and the supply of documentation needed to conduct and carry this out, eibe will appoint a dedicated Play Consultant in order to assist with any questions, queries, or issues which the Customer may have following contract award and project completion. Your Play Consultant will be your main point of contact for any contract related queries. This will provide you with a single point of contact rather than numerous, ensuring clear and consistent lines of communication for all contract queries, which may include meetings, site visits, phone and email communication. The Play Consultant will be supported by our Project Manager and Project Administration team to ensure continuity of service and after care during the contract delivery stage and beyond.
