Yate - Kingsgate Play Area Presentation

Kingsgate Play Area Yate Town Council

Brief

Understanding your requirements YateTownCouncil, wishes to refurbish theplayareaat KingsgatePark (KGP), to install newplayequipment and to replace equipment beyond its life cycle. KGP has exceptionally high visitor numbers. It is a much-loved play area - the most popular in Yate parish, it also attracts visitors from outside the local area, making it a key facility for community health and wellbeing. Phase 1 of the KGP re-development will involve the refurbishment of the existing play area, while phase 2 will provide a new replacement play area for toddlers and juniors up to the age of 11. This brief considers phase 2.

Phase 2 works aim to:

Install additional play equipment and to replace equipment beyond its life cycle

Relocate existing popular equipment to more suitable locations within KGP;

Improve accessibility and access to play for those with varying abilities and confidence levels;

Improve the design for a changing climate.

“Foster creativity, curiosity and encourage children to develop their skills”

Our Aim - Iain Etridge

We are pleased to present the design for your new playground at Kingsgate Play Area. Our approach to play provision aims to provide high quality play experiences for children of all abilities. To us this means offering physical, sensory and social play value with our equipment and overall design. The elements within your new playground allow children to play in many different ways, exploring their own ideas and actions, and interacting with the environment around them. We create playgrounds in accordance with the ten Principles for Designing Successful Play Spaces set out in Design for Play: A Guide to Creating Successful Play Spaces (Play England 2008), which states that successful play spaces: • Are “bespoke”. • Are well located. • Make use of natural elements. • Provide a wide range of play experiences. • Are accessible to both disabled and non-disabled children. • Meet community needs. • Allow children of different ages to play together. • Build in opportunities to experience risk and challenge. • Are sustainable and appropriately maintained. • Allow for change and evolution. In line with the above principles, your new design offers inclusive and accessible play opportunities. Wheelchair accessible and inclusive elements included across the play area are: • Integration Carousel • Integration Seesaw • Sandro Sand Play Unit with accessible ramp • Interactive Play Panels • Nest swing

Tango toddler/adult swing

Carousel The junior area, situated in the bark mulch pit, includes the accessible Janny unit, providing climbing, balancing and sliding play. Next to this is our Mallard Duck themed play unit, which provides a natural synergy with the Kingsgate Park duck lake and nature theme. This unit features great play value plus a high throughput of users, including climbing challenges, net climbing and a banister slide. Within the duck at floor levels there are also interactive games and further climbing net challenges, accessible to lesser able children. The Erin balance trail has been positioned here also to provide a natural looking trim tail featuring a range of balancing challenges leading to the Grilli Grasshopper which provides further balance and climbing for all ages. We have also relocated the popular, existing spinning units to various areas around the play area, and relocated the flat swings from the toddler area to the rear of the play area to provide a safer area for older children to enjoy swinging play. Provision of this range of equipment allows children who use the playground to progress to more challenging play throughout their childhood and allows access to as much learning and physical activity as possible. Elements of both the toddler and junior equipment have been selected to appeal to children of all abilities with the intention of giving every child the opportunity to enjoy themselves The equipment proposed is made from Robinia hardwood, from FSC certified sources and in keeping with the natural look of the park and the existing equipment and will provide long lasting play with minimal maintenance requirements, for many years to come. Overall, our design for your Kingsgate Play Area intends to meet the needs of the community and provide users of the play area with exciting, accessible and inclusive opportunities to play, featuring a huge number of play values and challenges to be enjoyed for many years to come

• Low level accessible play within the Duck Play Unit • Play house • Wetpour surfacing connecting play areas

We are adding the following accessible and inclusive physical play opportunities to your existing play area include spinning, sliding, rocking and climbing. Our design replaces the existing spinning disk with a wheelchair accessible carousel so children of any ability can take part in spinning play. The seesaw provides rocking that exercise children’s awareness of their physical capabilities and their environment and is wheelchair accessible. These are popular features with high enjoyment and excitement value featuring in most play areas. The Sandro play unit provides interactive sand play allowing social and cooperative play between users of all abilities. Wetpour areas have been linked to allow easy access across the play area, providing wheelchair access to all activities, including the nest swing and Tango toddler swing which allows interaction between parent and child. Sensory play experiences within your new design provide tactile and visual stimulation in the form of interactive play panels and surfacing with coloured nature shapes. The separate play house provides opportunities for imaginative play and can also be used as a quiet area. Further to this, the Duck themed play unit also allows low level access to the interactive play. We have positioned the Agneta play unit centrally within the toddler area to provide a challenging range of play values including sliding, climbing and balancing. Alongside this will be two Squirrel themed spring rockers to provide rocking play.

We are of course always aware that changes to the design may be required, and we are happy to consider changes to the proposed equipment/design, if required.

This is NOT a construction drawing 2. Images shown are for layout purposes only and may differ from actual product supplied. 3. All installation measurments should be taken from the supplied installation instructions 4. Any discrepancy found between information shown and measurments taken from site should be reported to eibe immediatley 5. Full area measurments are to be checked before installation can proceed 6. Check foundation level requirements for each item GENERAL NOTES If not indicated on this plan, north point must be confirmed prior to installation to ensure that slides do not face due south. Exact positions & orientation of new items may be subject to a final site survey and setting out plan. Any inconsistencies on site should be verified with eibe before commencement of work. eibe recommend that existing trees are risk-assessed by the client to ensure the integrity of accessible branches, that overhanging limbs do not conflict with new play equipment or vehicle access and that the canopy will not produce excessive leaf drop which could cause a hazard within the play area. This design layout conforms to the relevant EN Safety Standard. GRASS & GRASS MAT SURFACING Where equipment is installed directly into grass and the free height of fall is between 0.6m and 1.5m it is the responsibility of the playground operator to ensure that the grass sward is maintained in good order. Where equipment is installed with grass mat surfacing it is the responsibility of the playground operator to ensure that the grass is maintained in good order. When laid directly onto existing grass this surface will follow the natural contours of the ground. RUBBER MULCH SURFACING eibe recommend the use of a 50mm stone base when installing rubber mulch. If installed without the finished surface will be a reflection of the ground beneath it, following any undulations, & will not be a completely flat surface. Rubber mulch will not cure any existing drainage problems & will require foundations and/or some kind of drainage system prior to installation.

The play panels can be used by all abilities and provide a fun play point that offers puzzle solving and discovery. Alongside these, we have included musical elements such as musical chimes and a rain wheel to add to the sensory aspect of this play zone. Alongside this are a climbing cricket and snail, another great sensory and role play element within

this play space. Around a two-minute walk from the Sensory Play Zone, you will come across Grasslands, the second play zone within the park. This fantastic play zone offers climbing for children aged five and over, with various challenging crossings and ascents onto the multiple towers. This play feature has been designed to look like natural grassland and also contains natural carved grassland features to add to the theming. This fantastic climbing unit has been installed onto a natural-looking bonded mulch surface. Take a ten-minute walk, and you will stumble across our third play zone, Wetlands. This play zone includes our

brand new Robina Play Duck. A fantastic feature that offers climbing, role play and discovery. Flanked by two play panels, this item is a must-have for any country park! The last area within the play park is our Squirrels Dray toddler zone. This play zone has been designed for children up to five years old and is an introduction to climbing and swinging, promoting essential development skills at a young age, such as balancing and upper body strength. With the added theming elements of our carved wooden squirrels on top of the posts and also the squirrel spring rockers, this offers a fantastic play offering to the younger visitors of the park. A successful installation period led us to open these play zones in time for the start of the summer Kingsgate Park - Yate Town Council / 46

holidays in 2022, and as the first stage was so successful, the council have designed to add further items to each play zone with work to start in mid-Aug 2022.

The Borough of Dacorum is a local government district in Hertfordshire, England, that includes the towns of Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted, Tring, and Kings Langley. The district, formed in 1974, had a population of 137,799 in 2001.[1] Its name was taken from the old hundred of Dacorum, which covered approximately the same area. It is the westernmost of Hertfordshire’s districts, bordered to the west by the Chiltern and Aylesbury Vale districts of Buckinghamshire. In early 2022 eibe Play was invited to tender for the refurbishment of Canal Fields Play Area, situated in the beautiful town of Berkhamsted. The previous play area had come to the end of its life, and the council wanted to create a play space that the whole town council could be proud of. Berkhamsted has a proud, rich history, so there were plenty of elements that eibe Play could tap into to add theming within our new play space. From the remains of Berkhamsted Castle, located close to the play space, The Grand Union Canal that runs right next to the play area, and the coal deliveries that used to be loaded onto the trains leaving Berkhamsted being transported across the country.

The local area’s history was essential to us when designing the new play space. We need to educate the local children about the town’s history while providing a fun-packed play space.

The play area has been designed for children between 2-12 years old, focusing on how we could also cater to children of all abilities. When creating any play space, you must include a variety of fun play values that promote risk and challenge.

Choosing items from our fantastic Paradiso Robinia range of equipment, we chose a range of play equipment that can offer various play opportunities for children of all ages. Such as our large Isa multi-play unit within a bark pit. This item blends into the surroundings and provides children with three main towers connected by challenging crossings, including a lovely green tunnel slide. This item will make the children feel like they are amongst the tree tops. Surrounding this multi-play units are a Junior Swing Frame and an Inclusive Floor Roundabout. The roundabout allows children of all abilities, including wheelchairs, to play together, and as it has been installed onto an artificial surface, it can be accessed all year round. Opposite the Play Unit Isa, we have included a large sand pit, which will add enormous play value to an already packed play area. The sand pit includes construction chains and buckets, whilst the local children will have great fun finding the dinosaur fossils. Further along from the sand pit, we have included our toddler play unit, which offers a variety of play values such as climbing and sliding, promoting critical development skills for children of a young age. Our Coal Train and tunnel is located next to it, designed to resemble the trains leaving Berkhamsted Station, transporting coal across the country.

Another fantastic point of this play space is that all the play equipment can be accessed via an all-weather path leading throughout the play space. This is an excellent addition as it allows access to all the play equipment all year round.

In the middle of the play space is our Play Mound, with sleeping theming to resemble the remains of Berkhamsted Castle. Kids will have great fun climbing the castle remains to the Stainless Steel Broad Slide, which provides a fun route back down again.

Around the mound, we have refurbished several existing play items, giving them a new lease of life. Our Climbing Tree Ema, Duck Spring Rockers, and Four Seater Seesaw are added. All of which will be a great hit with the children using the park and the local community. eibe Play opened the play area in early August 2022, opening it up to be used and loved by the children eagerly waiting patiently outside. We are very proud of this play space and look forward to working alongside Dacorum Borough Council to ensure this play space remains a hit for years to come.

Two schools got jolly lucky and had first use of the brand new adventure playspace at Holly Hill Leisure Centre recently.

Officially opened by the local mayor on Friday July 21st, children from Sarisbury Infant & Junior Schools and Park Gate Infant School were thrilled to be invited to try out the new equipment at the £265,000 park, courtesy of eibe Play and Fareham Borough Council.

Working in conjunction with Emma Watts, Leisure & Community Manager, eibe won a competitive tender process earlier in the year. The project then centred round a host of great robinia equipment. The traditionally metal playground has been transformed into a more natural wonderland with plenty of wooden play products. The centrepiece is our Spirit of the Wood unit, which unsurprisingly was what the youngsters all sprinted towards, as witnessed on the accompanying video on eibe’s Flickr page. eibe’s creative director David Hibberd, who lives just a stone’s throw from the new park, oversaw the final completion, spending

several days installing and making everything perfect for the big opening.

“It is always rewarding when you see so many kids enjoying themselves,” said David, “I think Holly Hill will be busy every day this summer.”

High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) sheets are extruded and co-extruded thermoplastic materials that are used worldwide in the manufacture of panels and components for the Playground, Sport, Leisure and Recreation Industries. The versatile properties of this material, including UV stability, make it resistant to fading, moisture, weather, stain and graffiti. The perfect choice for outdoor environments. HDPE is easily routed or engraved using current CNC technology, in the case of 2-colour sheet options, you can remove the outer colour and revealing the colour inside to create almost unlimited design capabilities. Increasingly used across a wide range of industries and applications, HDPE panels are being used to replace timber and composite panel components. Whilst the initial cost of these materials may be lower, the long-termmaintenance requirements and shorter life expectancy make their choice a false economy. Play Sand Surfacing

Sand is one of the most popular choices of safety surfacing. Not only is a cost-effective solution for large play areas, it provides a fantastic sensory experience for the children. It engages the senses and allows for fine-tuning physical movements which aid child development. It provides the opportunity for creative, constructive and imaginative play and we have even got to the play equipment yet! Due to the existing Tarmac area, we will created a raised sand pit which will be 300mm deep. The sand will be retained using untreated, oak sleepers which will be bolted to the tarmac. This will also provides an additional seating option for children. EN1177 state that a minimum 200mm depth is required for loose-fill materials such as sand or bark mulch to be used as a playground safety surface. However we will provide a 300mm depth as standard.

The benifits of using Play Sand: • Development of fine motor skills • Hand-Eye Co-ordination • Promotes Creativity and imagination • Sensory Development through touch - moulding the sand • Promotes Physical Development through muscle skills - dig, pour, sift, scoop etc • Encourages Social skills

Maintenance: • We recommend racking the sand pit every day/week, along with a visual inspection to check for any unwanted objects hidden within the sand.

Surfacing Bark Mulch

As with most Playbarks and Play Woodchips available, they are manufactured from natural, organic bark and wood type materials. Therefore they provide an attractive but very safe impact-absorbing surface if used within our guidelines. Utilising nature’s own products as such, determines these products may contain a small quantity of splinters which ultimately knit together to assist in providing the impact-absorbing surface. Play Chip is wood sourced from the inner most part of the tree - it’s chipped, and treated. It’s lighter in colour than Play Bark and creates a natural, rustic look. Play Chip is generally the harder wearing of the two materials and will therefore last longer. We recommend it for play areas that receive very heavy foot traffic and require substantial durability. Such surfaces are usually commonplace in public play areas in parks and school playgrounds, along with more expensive options such as the rubber surface layer you sometimes see beneath the larger climbing frames. They can also be employed in private play areas in gardens to make the ground less dangerous to fall on.

• Products are clean, safe and 100% natural. • They are cost-effective alternatives to synthetic surfaces • Very easy to install and maintain. • Our safety surfacing materials are FSC sourced.
